The present volume is the third work in Ziba Mir-Hosseini’s research trilogy, the outcome of more than three decades of ethnographic study on family laws in Muslim societies. This body of research focuses not only on juristic texts but also on the lived experiences of women within the fabric of everyday life.

Throughout this intellectual journey—from her study of family courts in Iran and Morocco in Marriage on Trial, to her engagement with religious scholars in Islam and Gender, and her involvement in producing the documentary Divorce Iranian Style—the author has consistently sought to examine the relationship between Islamic jurisprudence, state law, and gender justice.

The book also reflects the dynamic intersection between academic scholarship and social activism, from collaboration with Sisters in Islam in Malaysia to co-founding the global movement Musawah, which advocates for justice and equality within the Muslim family.
