Of the twelve volumes of this Shahnameh edition, eight volumes are devoted to the text itself, while the remaining four contain annotations, explanatory notes, verse indices, and all supplementary materials that assist readers in gaining a deeper understanding of the main text.
This eight-volume edition of the Shahnameh presents, for the first time in Iran, the complete critical edition of the text, prepared by Dr. Jalal Khaleghi-Motlagh with the collaboration of Dr. Mahmoud Omidsalar (volume six) and Abolfazl Khatibi (volume seven). The work is published in eight volumes, comprising 4,058 pages and 49,530 verses.

This critical and scholarly edition was produced after the examination and evaluation of approximately fifty manuscript copies of the Shahnameh held in libraries around the world, the publication of the results of these studies in numerous articles, and ultimately the selection of sixteen of the oldest and most authoritative manuscripts as the basis for the edited text. According to leading Shahnameh scholars in Iran, Europe, and the United States, this is the most accurate and reliable edition of the national epic of the Iranian people.

The work is the result of more than half a century of tireless effort—over thirty-five years by Dr. Khaleghi-Motlagh himself, and fifteen years by his collaborators.
