کتاب حاضر نخستین جلد از مجموعه‌ی ارباب حلقه‌ها است. ارباب حلقه‌ها یکی از مشهورترین و تاثیرگذارترین کتاب‌های ادبیات در قرن 21 به شمار می‌رود. این مجموعه ادامه‌ی اثر قبلی جی. آر. آر. تالکین به نام هابیت است که در همین ژانر نوشته شده است. محوریت یاران حلقه در باب هابیت‌ها و امید است و خواننده چیزهای زیادی درباره‌ی شخصیت و تاریخ‌شان در می‌یابد. کتاب علاوه‌بر هابیت‌ها از موجوداتی افسانه‌ای دیگر سخن می‌گوید که در ابتدای کتاب به معرفی کوتاهی از هریک از آن‌ها مانند دوزف، اورک، گابلین، الف و ترول می‌پردازد. بیلبو بگینز، شخصیت اصلی داستان موجودی از نژاد هابیت است. او حلقه‌ای را پیدا می‌کند که از قدرت و اهمیت آن بی‌خبر است. فقط می‌داند با در دست کردن حلقه ناپدید می‌شود. او نمی‌داند که آن حلقه، همان حلقه‌ای است که سائورون به‌دنبال آن است.
