Not much time has passed since the application of economic theory in explaining the behaviors related to the family. The result of this theoretical development has been the emergence of a new branch of family economics. The subject of family economics is mainly focused on the different stages of the household life cycle, based on which decision-making on the formation, completion, and dissolution of the family is analyzed from an economic perspective. The existing theoretical approaches in family economics are briefly introduced and the most important empirical studies conducted are reviewed.

زمان زیادی از کاربرد نظریهٔ اقتصادی در تبیین رفتارهای مربوط به خانواده نمی‌گذرد. حاصل این پیشرفت نظری ظهور شاخهٔ جدیدی در علم اقتصاد خانواده بوده است. موضوع اقتصاد خانواده عمدتا معطوف به مراحل مختلف چرخهٔ زندگی خانوار است که بر اساس آن تصمیم‌سازی بر سر تشکیل، تکمیل و انحلال خانواده از منظر اقتصادی تحلیل می‌شود، کتاب پیش رو را می‌توان صرفا به منزلهٔ مدخلی برای ورود به این عرصه دانست که بر مبنای آن رویکردهای نظری موجود در اقتصاد خانواده به اجمال معرفی شده و مهم‌ترین مطالعات تجربی انجام یافته مرور می‌شوند.
