داستان، عنصر مشترک همۀ انواع خلاقه است. در آثار یونان باستان (تراژدی، حماسه) نمایشنامه، فیلم‌نامه، شعر روایتی (منظومه)، قصه، رمانس، رمان، ناولت، داستان کوتاه و هر نوع اثر خلاقۀ دیگر وجود دارد و شامل رشته حادثه‌‌هایی است که برحسب توالی زمان آمده. این رشته حـادثه‌‌ها، نباید از سه حـادثه کمتر باشد، اما تعـداد آن‌‌ها می‌‌تواند از سه، تا بی‌‌نهایت ادامه داشته باشد.
داستان به معنای عام کلمه تقریبا هم‌معنای ادبیات است و درواقع، اگر مقولۀ شعر غیر روایتی را از ادبیات کنار بگذاریم، داستان مترادفی است برای ادبیات، اما در معنای خاص و محدود خود، داستان مترادف و هم‌معنای ادبیات داستانی است و شامل قصه، رمانس، داستان کوتاه ، ناولت و رمان ، رمان داستان کوتاه و داستان های به پیوست است که هرکدام از این‌ها متفرعاتی دارند و هریک تعریفی خاص خود.
ازاین‌رو، خصوصیت‌های معنایی و ساختاری آن ها باهم متفاوت است ، این تفاوت آن ها را همان‌قدر از هم متمایز است که انسان دیروزی از انسان امروزی.
