July 1812. Venezuelan leader Francisco Miranda is defeated and captured by Spanish Captain General Monteverde. Simon Bolivar, Miranda's lieutenant, is on the run. Hidden by patriots, he has so far been able to escape searches. The Spanish occupy three-quarters of the country. The repression is terrible. Massacres and pillaging follow one another. Since its creation in 1948, this piece, which Albert Camus said: “It owes nothing to any school or to any fashion and yet it accords with the terrible cruelty of the time without ceasing to refer to a pity as old as the heart human”, has never ceased to be performed in any part of the world. It has been adapted into more than twenty languages.
