In general, operations research is divided into two categories: hard and soft. In the difficult field, which is also raised in the course of operation in research, they solve the problem using mathematical models. Research in soft operations, which is one of the new topics, opens the way to complex problems and uses other methods. Research in soft operations is related to issues and problems that the decision maker's goals are not yet clear and many factors influence it, there are many ambiguities and differences in this field as to what problems they want to solve.

به شکل کلی تحقیق در عملیات به دو دسته سخت و نرم تقسیم می‌شود. در حوزه سخت که در درس عملیات در تحقیق نیز مطرح می‌شود، با استفاده از مدل‌های ریاضی به حل مساله می‌پردازند. تحقیق در عملیات نرم که از مباحث جدید است در مسایل پیچیده راه‌گشاست و از روش‌های دیگری بهره‌ می‌برد. تحقیق در عملیات نرم در ارتباط با مسایل و مشکلاتی مطرح می‌شود که اهداف تصمیم‌گیرنده هنوز مشخص نیست و عوامل زیادی در آن تاثیرگذارند، ابهامات و اختلافات زیادی در این زمینه که چه مشکلاتی را می‌خواهند حل کنند وجود دارد.
