The story of this novel is a narrative of David Kern's life; A twenty-three-year-old young man and a restaurant waiter who is in love with a girl named Mari who ironically ignores him. David found a typewriter copy of a book in the drawer of the old honey table and he likes it. He decides to give Marie the typed text to impress her as a writer. He succeeds in this and Marie becomes interested in him. David then secretly sends the typewriter copy of the novel to a publisher in Frankfurt and the novel is published, which begins a successful life for David as a writer, but the constant fear of plagiarism that he has committed makes him nervous until one day when he is signing the book for fans, he finds a man who claims to be the real author of the novel.

داستان این رمان روایتی است از زندگی داوید کرن؛ جوان بیست و سه ساله و گارسن یک رستوران که عاشق دختری به نام ماری که از قضا اعتنایی به او ندارد. داوید در کشوی میز عسلی قدیمی، نسخه ماشین نوشت کتابی را پیدا کرده و از آن خوشش می آید. تصمیم می گیرد متن تایپ شده را به ماری بدهد تا به عنوان نویسنده او را تحت تاثیر قرار دهد. او در این کار موفق هم می شود و ماری به او علاقه مند می شود. داوید در ادامه و به صورت پنهانی نسخه ماشین نوشت رمان را برای یک ناشر در فرانکفورت می فرستد و رمان منتشر می شود که برای داوید یک زندگی موفق در مقام نویسنده آغاز می شود، ولی ترس دائمی از دزدی ادبی که کرده است اورا عصبی می کند تا اینکه روزی هنگام امضای کتاب برای طرفداران سر و کله مردی پیدا می شود که ادعا می کند نویسنده ی واقعی رمان است.
