In the history of leftist political movements, melancholy has always been a hidden strain of leftist culture. The successive defeats of the left - especially the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall - have caused many thinkers and activists of the political left to fall into a melancholic depression: left melancholia. Melancholy is a state of depression that has two specific characteristics: one is guilt and the other is inaction. Perhaps in Iran, the melancholia of the left has not been discussed much, but it has occupied many thinkers in the West for many years and has been one of the most important and controversial issues raised in leftist circles.

در تاریخ جنبش‌های سیاسی چپ‌گرا، مالیخولیا همواره سویۀ پنهانی از فرهنگ چپ بوده است. شکست‌های متوالی چپ ــ بالأخص فروپاشی شوروی و دیوار برلین ــ بسیاری از اندیشمندان و فعالان چپ سیاسی را دچار افسردگی مالیخولیاواری کرده است: مالیخولیای چپ. مالیخولیا (یا سودازدگی) حالتی از افسردگی است که دو ویژگی خاص دارد: یکی احساس گناه و دیگری بی‌عملی. شاید در ایران چندان به مالیخولیای چپ پرداخته نشده است، اما سال‌هاست که متفکران زیادی را در غرب مشغول خود کرده است و یکی از مباحث مهم و مناقشه‌برانگیز مطرح در محافل چپ بوده است.
