The narrator of the story is a paralytic boy that begins the story with a description of spring, alley and people, Muhib'ali's house and his wife and son, Sultan'ali, the main characters of the story. The life of this family is like the most Iranian families in the early years of the present decade. "Muhib'ali" is a merchant in Bazaar, has religious believes and his wife obeys him and is a little superstitious. Their son was not successful in his first marriage, because his wife dead of an illness. After 20 years he decided to get marry but his father died and the life begins in a new way.

راوي داستان پسري افليج است كه داستان را با توصيفي از فرا رسيدن بهار، فضاي كوچه و مردم، وصف خانه محبعلي و زنش و پسرش سلطانعلي، شخصيت هاي اصلي داستان آغاز مي كند. زندگي اين خانواده، شبيه زندگي اكثر خانواده هاي ايراني در سالهاي ابتدايي اين قرن است. محبعلي، كاسب بازار، معتقد به باورهاي ديني بوده، زنش نيز مطيع شوهر و تا حدي اهل خرافات است. پسر آنان در ازدواج اول موفق نبوده زيرا عروس، پس از بيماري مي ميرد. او پس از بيست سال تصميم به ازدواج دارد. در اين بين پدر نيز مي ميرد و زندگي به گونه اي ديگر آغاز مي شود.
