Musmir: nukhustīn kitāb-i Fārsī darbārahʼi zabān shanāsī va ʻilm al-lughah Persiska (Farsi) 2020

The book Muthmir by Siraj al-Din Ali Khan Arzu (1099–1169 AH) is regarded as the first Persian work devoted to linguistics and philology. This pioneering text has been published with an introduction and critical edition by Seyed Mohammad Rastegoo. Arzu composed the book under the influence of Al-Muzhir fi ‘Ulum al-Lugha wa Anwa‘iha by Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, structuring it into forty-two sections (“principles”) that address foundational linguistic issues in the Persian language.

In Muthmir, topics such as synonymy, homonymy, semantic divergence, concordance, literal and figurative usage, phonetic correspondence and substitution, and other lexical and semantic questions are examined. Throughout the discussions, the author also pays attention to etymology, including the demonstration of connections and shared roots between certain Persian and Indic words. Beyond compiling earlier views, Arzu adopts a critical approach, evaluating and challenging the opinions of his predecessors while offering perceptive and nuanced insights of his own.

Muthmir holds a distinguished place in the history of Persian linguistic studies and remains a valuable resource for scholars of linguistics, literature, and Iranian cultural history. True to its title—meaning “fruitful”—the work provides a rich and illuminating window onto early efforts to systematize linguistic knowledge within the Persian intellectual tradition.
