Simenon, who had long distanced himself from the cinematic future of his work, confided at the end of his life that he would have dreamed of seeing this novel adapted for the screen, with Charles Aznavour in the lead role. For the moment, no director has yet dared to take on the challenge. Yet he is truly Simenon.
