"Blindness" is a remarkable study of how Western culture has imagined what it is like to be blind, especially as it is represented in that most visual of arts, painting. Art historian Moshe Barasch here draws upon not only the span of art history from antiquity to the eighteenth century but also the classical and biblical traditions that underpin so much of artistic representation: Blind Homer, the healing of the blind, blind musicians, blindness as a punishment, blindness as a special mark. The book discusses blindness in antiquity, in the Early Christian world, in the Middle Ages, and in the Renaissance, with a final long consideration of Diderot. تاریخ تصاویر ذهنی یکی از جذاب‌ترین شاخه‌های تاریخ‌نگاری امروز است که با سه جهان ذهنی، عینی و متنی گره خورده است. در این کتاب موشه باراش، یکی از برجسته‌ترین مورخان اندیشه و هنر، انواع دریافت‌ها از نابینایی و بازتاب یافتن این دریافت‌ها در آثار هنری را از اعصار کهن و یونان باستان تا اروپای قرون‌وسطی و رنسانس و سرانجام زمانۀ دیدرو بررسی کرده است. نویسنده در کتاب خویش تلقی‌های ذهنی مردمان هر دوره و عوامل شکل‌گیری آنها را تحلیل کرده، زیست واقعی نابینایان را در جوامع، مطابق اسناد، به‌اختصار کاویده و سرانجام شیوۀ بازتاب‌یافتن هر تلقی را در آثار هنری اعم از اشعار، نمایشنامه‌ها و به‌ویژه نقاشی‌ها و مجسمه‌ها نشان داده است. تاریخ نابینایی بخشی از تاریخ جامعۀ انسانی است که در متن تجربه‌های دردناک بشری جایگاهی مهم و نمادین دارد. مطالعۀ کتاب حاضر برای پژوهشگران و علاقه‌مندان حوزه‌های فلسفه، تاریخ هنر، پژوهش هنر، تاریخ اندیشه، ادبیات، نقد ادبی و جامعه‌شناسی مفید خواهد بود.
