اگر تاریخ ایران را جست‌وجو کنیم، خاستگاه آن را در منطقه‌ای می‌یابیم به‌نام میانرودان؛ ناحیه‌ای در شرق دریای مدیترانه بر محور دو رود دجله و فرات گفته می‌شود که محدوده آن از شمال به کوه‌های زاگرس و از جنوب به خلیج فارس و شبه‌جزیره عربستان می‌رسد، و محل کنونی کشور عراق به همراه قسمت‌هایی از ایران، سوریه، کویت، و ترکیه را پوشش می‌دهد، که به آن «هلال حاصلخیز» و «گاهواره تمدن» هم می‌گویند.
