ساحره کشی یکی از مهم ترین رخدادها در توسعه ی جامعه ی سرمایه داری و شکل گیری پرولتاریای مدرن بود.چرا که به کارگیری کارزار ترور علیه زنان،که به هیچ پیگرد دیگری شبیه نبود،مقاومت دهقانان اروپایی را در برابر یورشی که اشراف و دولت علیه آنان راه انداختند ضعیف کرد،آن هم در زمانی که اجتماع دهقانی پیش از آن که بر اثر فشار مضاعف خصوصی سازی زمین،افزایش مالیات،و توسعه ی کنترل دولتی بر هر سویه از حیات اجتماعی اش در حال فروپاشی بود.ساحره کشی دودستگی میان زنان و مردان را عمیق کرد،به مردان آموخت که از قدرت زنان بترسند،و جهان و آداب و رسوم،باورها و موضوعات اجتماعی ای را نابود کرد که وجودشان با انضباط کاری سرمایه داری ناسازگار بود،و بدین گونه عناصر اصلی باز تولید اجتماعی را باز تعریف کرد.
