پروسپر مریمه (1803-1870) در خانواده ای فرهیخته به دنیا آمد و پیش از آنکه به حیطه ادبیات قدم بگذارد نقاشی مستعد بود او نوشتن را از سال 1825 آغاز کرد و در سال 1844 به عضویت آکادمی زبان و ادبیات فرانسه درآمد بیشتر نوشته های او شامل داستان های کوتاهی می شوند که در چند جلد منتشر شده اند مریمه به زبان روسی تسلط داشت و از نویسندگانی مانند پوشکین الهام می گرفت. داستان بلند کار من از معروف ترین نوشته های این نویسنده فرانسوی است.
