«خوان داوید نازیو» مرگ و فقدان انسانی که عشق ما نثار اوست را به از دست دادن عضوی از بدن‌مان تعبیر می‌کند؛ ازدست شدن او گویی ازدست‌شدن دست یا پایمان است! با همان فروپاشی عصبی و تجربه‌‌ای شبیه به همان دردی که آدمی ممکن است هنگام ازدست دادن دست یا پایش احساس کند. حال تصور کنیم اگر پیش از آنکه به‌واقع دست یا پایمان را از‌دست بدهیم، از قریب‌الوقوع بودن این مهم، این فقدان، مطلع شویم، وضعیت ما چه‌گونه خواهد بود؟! ما چه‌گونه با ناپدید شدن عضوی از بدنمان، بخشی از جانمان و درد نامتصور این ناپدیدشدن در روح و جسم‌مان، مواجه می‌شویم؟ ماجرای کتاب «مسئله‌ی مرگ و زندگی» نوشته‌ی «اروین یالوم» و «مریلین یالوم» از پیش‌آگاهی نویسندگانش از این موضوع شروع شده است. مریلین به سرطان دچار می‌شود و مرگش حتمی‌ست. زوج عاشق که سالیان سال را با عشقی عمیق و محبتی ازلی زندگی کرده‌اند، حال می‌دانند که یکی‌شان به ناچار، خیلی زود باید از این جهان درگذرد. زوج عاشق تصمیم می‌گیرند که هرآنچه از زندگی و مرگ می‌دانند و از پس گذر سالیان به تجربه دریافته و به آن فکر کرده‌اند را بنویسند، آن‌هم درحالی‌که مرگ مریلین نزدیک است. درمیانه‌ی نوشتن کتاب است که مریلین درمی‌گذرد و برای اروین عاشق، اینک یکی هست که دیگر نیست! این فقدان عظیم، برای اروین، نه عنصری بازدارنده، که نیرویی پیش‌برنده می‌شود و او «مسئله‌ی مرگ و زندگی» را با ستایش بی پایانش از زندگی، عشق و البته ایمان به حتمی بودن مرگ، ادامه داده و به پایان می‌رساند. همان‌طور که مریلین نیز باوجود آگاهی تمام و کمالش به حتمیّت مرگی که هرلحظه به او نزدیک‌تر می‌شد، تا آخرین لحظه، دست از زندگی کردن برنداشت، اروین هم به مدد همین عشق به مریلین و به زندگی، در فقدان معشوق دست از زندگی برنمی‌دارد و بر اهمیتش پافشاری می‌کند؛ «مسئله‌ی مرگ و زندگی» ماحصل این پافشاری بر عشق، بر زندگی و بر پذیرش ناگزیری مرگ است که قسمی از این زندگی‌ست و البته عمل کردن به رسالت عظیم نویسنده و درمانگری که می‌داند باید این تجربه‌ها را با جهان درمیان بگذارد.
