The medical tradition that developed in the lands of Islam during the medieval period (c. 650-1500) has, like a few others, influenced the fates and fortunes of countless human beings. It is a story of contact and cultural exchange across countries and creeds, affecting many people from kings to the common crowd. This tradition formed the roots from which modern Western medicine arose. Contrary to the stereotypical picture, medieval Islamic medicine was not simply a conduit for Greek ideas, but a venue for innovation and change. Medieval Islamic Medicine is organized around five the emergence of medieval Islamic medicine and its intense cross-pollination with other cultures; the theoretical medical framework; the function of physicians within the larger society; medical care as seen through preserved case histories; and the role of magic and devout religious invocations in scholarly as well as everyday medicine. A concluding chapter on the "afterlife" concerns the impact of this tradition on modern European medical practices, and its continued practice today. The book includes an index of persons and their books; a timeline of developments in East and West; and a section on further reading.

دانش پزشکی در روزگار گذشته بر پایۀ بسیاری از باورها و مسایل فرهنگی و اجتماعی استوار بوده و تقریباً در اغلب موارد، طبیبان حکمای همه چیزدانی بودند که دانش خود را نه تنها از طبیعت بلکه آمیخته با عقاید و باورهای دینی افسانه اساطیر، جادو و جادوگری تخيل ها و حتی خودستایی عرضه میکردند به همین دلیل مطالعه تاریخ پزشکی در قرون میانه اسلامی با دشواریهایی از این دست مواجه است. از سوی دیگر عمل پزشکی در جهان اسلام از یک سو برآمده از تفکرات و تحولات اندیشه ای است و از دیگر سو شکل دهنده بسیاری از پدیده ها و رفتارهای اجتماعی است؛ برای توضیح این مسئله نمونه های تاریخی فراوانی را می توان برشمرد از جمله این که چگونه گفتمانهای پزشکی تحت تأثیر نحله های فکری معتزله و اشاعره قرار میگیرند و یا این که مشکلاتی که در فرایند همه گیری بیماریهای ویرانگری چون طاعون و با و... در جامعه به وجود می آید، چگونه مفسران و متکلمان را به بازخوانی اندیشه هایشان وا می دارد. تاریخ نگاری پزشکی در ایران و جهان اسلام عموماً با کلیشه سازی عامه پسندی مبتنی بر پیشرفتها، سرآمدی و تأثیر گذاری بر جامعه علمی جهانی همراه بوده است اما این کتاب به دور از چنین کلیشه هایی درصدد است به طرح بعضی از مباحث نظیر نقش زنان در پزشکی، درمانهای خانگی و مسایل مهمتری چون نهادسازی مراکز ارائه خدمات پزشکی یا بازار خدمات درمانی و نیز مراقبت سلامتی در مناطق روستایی و کم جمعیت در جهان اسلام بپردازد.
