The history of Afghan culture after Islam has a deep connection with theoretical and practical Sufism. Even today, Sufism is considered one of the most influential cultural, religious, social, and even political currents in this country. In spite of the works done on Sufism in Afghanistan, so far no solid, comprehensive, and systematic work has been published on mysticism research in contemporary Afghanistan, current Afghan tariqahs, and investigation of the political, cultural, and social functions and achievements of Afghan Sufis. The current book written by Seyyed Jamaluddin Mousavi, a researcher from the Afghanistan region, responds to this cultural need. First, the background of mysticism research in contemporary Afghanistan is discussed. Then the reader goes on a journey from north to south and from east to west of Afghanistan to meet and get to know famous Sufis in the Naqshbandiyya, Qadiriyya, Chishtiyyah, and Suhrawardyyah tariqats. In the end, the functions and political, economic, and social achievements of contemporary Afghan Sufis are examined and analyzed.
