This book is one of the last writings of Ernesto Laclau, and in a way, it is a masterpiece and the final product of his entire thinking and experience that has spanned four decades of ups and downs. The most important aspect of Laclau's intellectual endeavors is his theoretical position against the Marxist tradition and facing the crisis that encompasses this entire intellectual tradition, and, in this sense, populism, about populist reason, is the extract of this fruitful encounter. In fact, it can be said that the present book, independent of its theoretical pre-history, presents the question of the crisis of Marxism in the most complete way and, according to some, answers it in a coherent way.

این کتاب از آخرین نوشته‌های ارنستو لاکلائو و به ‌نحوی در حکم شاهکار و محصول نهایی کل تفکر و تجربه‌ی اوست که چهار دهه‌ی پر فراز و نشیب را طی کرده است. مهم‌ترین وجه تلاش‌های فکری لاکلائو موضع‌گیری نظری او در برابر سنت مارکسیستی و مواجهه با بحرانی است که کل این سنت فکری را دربرگرفته و، از این حیث، پوپولیسم، درباره‌ی عقل پوپولیستی عصاره‌ی این مواجهه‌ی پربار است. در واقع، می‌توان گفت کتاب حاضر مستقل از پیش‌تاریخ نظری‌اش به کامل‌ترین شکل پرسش بحران مارکسیسم را پیش روی ما می‌نهد و، به زعم برخی، به شکلی منسجم نیز بدان پاسخ می‌گوید.
