The present book contains the daily memories of a teenage girl named Yoko Moriwaki, who eventually became a victim of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the United States. Yoko portrays the war-torn atmosphere of Japan in 1945 and writes about her pain and suffering in her afflicted homeland. Paul Hamm, the editor of the English version of Yoko's memoirs, added readable parts explaining the political, economic, and social conditions of Japan in those years, and completed Yoko's work - which was left unfinished by her tragic death - with an enlightening introduction and conclusion. Hamm writes: "Yoko is a feather in the heart of the storm."
