Jeanette Winterson (born August 27, 1959, Manchester) is a British author, critic, and literary professor known for her experimental, bold, and often humorous style that has earned her a prominent place in contemporary literature. Her debut novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985), a semi-autobiographical story about a lesbian girl raised in a religious household, won the Whitbread Prize and was later adapted into a successful BBC series. Her other notable works include The Passion, Sexing the Cherry, Written on the Body, The PowerBook, Frankissstein: A Love Story, and her memoir Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?. Winterson’s writing—marked by nonlinear narratives, poetic language, and themes of identity, love, gender, and technology—has pushed the boundaries of fiction and established her as a leading voice in feminist and postmodern literature.
