This novel is the story of an illegal boy who born in a far village from a young and beautiful mother and after a while she sent him to his father and disappears. The boy grows up in his grandfather's house and enters the Rome University and falls in love with a rich girl; he finds his mother in a bad situation. He takes his mother to home to live together after his marriage, but his wife doesn't agree and leaves him. On the other hand, his mother decided to suicide not to destroy her son's life. At the last moment he finds a medal beside her mother, he opens it and sees cinders in it. Therefore life is as cinders in her eyes.

اين رمان سرگذشت پسر نامشروعي است كه در قريه اي دور افتاده از مادري جوان و زيبا متولد شده كه پس از چندي او را نزد پدر مي فرستد و خود ناپديد مي شود. پسر به تدريج در خانه ي پدر بزرگ، بالنده مي شود، تعليم و تربيت صحيح مي يابد، به دانشگاه رم وارد مي شود و عاقبت عاشق دختري ثروتمند مي گردد؛ اما او كه هرگز نتوانسته مادر را فراموش كند به جست و جويش بر مي خيزد و سرانجام او را تيره روز و تنها مي يابد. هنگامي كه مي خواهد مادر را به خانه ببرد تا پس از ازدواج، با او و همسرش زندگي كند، نامزدش تن به اين كار نمي دهد و او را ترك مي كند. از طرف ديگر، مادر كه نمي خواهد زندگي پسر را در هم فرو ريزد، دست به خودكشي مي زند. در آخرين لحظه، پسر كنار مادر مدالي مي يابد و قاب آن را مي گشايد و در درونش جز خاكستر چيزي نمي يابد. بدين سان زندگي نيز در نظرش خاكستري بيش نيست.
