Ricardo Reis returned to Lisbon for the funeral of his friend, poet Fernando Pessoa. Sixteen years have passed, where he practiced medicine in Brazil, and now he's beating the streets bathed by rain. She would like to be with Marcenda, who is composing a couple of hours, but she makes love with a hotel maid, Lídia. The spectrum of the poet's poet just returned comes back, still wearing the suit in which he was buried a while ago. Ricardo Reis s-a întors în Lisabona pentru înmormîntarea prietenului său, poetul Fernando Pessoa. Au trecut şaisprezece ani, în care a practicat medicina în Brazilia, iar acum bate străzile scăldate de ploi. Ar vrea să fie cu Marcenda, căreia-i compune o odă, însă face dragoste cu o cameristă de la hotel, Lídia. Spectrul prietenului-poet abia plecat revine, încă purtînd costumul în care a fost îngropat cu puţin timp în urmă. Sîntem în istoricul an ١٩٣٦, norii fascismului încep să se adune ameninţători, Războiul Civil Spaniol nu e departe, aşa că cei doi, om şi spectru care mai are de pierdut opt luni printre pămînteni, vorbesc, îşi citesc unul altuia ştirile şi vorbesc: un minunat dialog despre adevăr, poezie, filosofie, destin şi iubire.
