This book seeks to portray the history of the Crusades as it was perceived, experienced, and narrated by the other side—that is, from the Arab perspective. Its content is based almost exclusively on the testimonies of contemporary Arab historians and chroniclers.
Amin Maalouf, born in Lebanon in 1949, has lived in Paris since 1976. After studying economics and sociology, he worked for many years as a foreign correspondent, with assignments in more than 60 countries. A former editor-in-chief of two respected journals—An-Nahar International and Jeune Afrique—he now devotes himself full-time to writing. He achieved his breakthrough as an author with The Crusades Through Arab Eyes. First published in 1983, the book has since been translated into around twenty languages. Maalouf’s body of work has since expanded to include five novels; for The Rock of Tanios (1993), he was awarded France’s highest literary honor, the Goncourt Prize, that same year.

Amin Maalouf, född i Libanon 1949, har varit bosatt i Paris alltsedan 1976. Efter studier i ekonomi och sociologi arbetade han i många år som utlandskorrespondent med uppdrag i över 60 olika länder. Före detta chefredaktör på två ansedda tidskrifter -- An-nahar International och Jeune Afrique, ägnar han sig idag på heltid åt sitt författarskap. Han fick sitt genombrott som författare med Korstågen enligt araberna. Boken utgavs först 1983 och har redan översatts till ett tjugotal språk. Amin Maaloufs författarskap har sedan dess utökats med fem romaner, för Tanios Klippan (1993) tilldelades han det högsta litterära priset i Frankrike samma år; Goncourtpriset.
