تقلع السفينة فاردة شراعها مغادرة ماليندي. في الأيام التالية أُصبت بدوار بحر رهيب، لكن حينما استطعت أن أتمالك نفسي أخيرًا بدأت أراقب سير الأمور، كان «دي جاما» فظًّا خشنًا وهذا يتناسب مع مسؤولياته الكثيرة، لكنه بالفعل معجب بذلك العربي «ابن ماجد» الذي صار مرشد الرحلة إلى الهند، وكان من حقه أن يقابل القبطان متي شاء. لقد صار وجه «ابن ماجد» مألوفًا هنا بجسمه الضئيل وعمامته وضحكته، وقد سماه البرتغاليون «المعلم الفلكي». لم يستطيعوا نطق العبارة فخرجت من أفواههم «ماليمونكا»، كذلك حاولوا تسميته «أمير البحار» فخرجت الكلمة «الميرانتي». الآن عرفت من أين جاء هذا الاسم الغريب، «الميرانتي» هو نفسه «أحمد بن ماجد».
