When Luca Steinmann entered Donbass through Russia on February 18, 2022, he did not imagine that a few hours later, Moscow would close the borders of that region, preventing entry to other journalists and observers who could have witnessed the attack it was about to launch. “What was supposed to be a short trip turned into a dramatic adventure that continues, in Ukraine and within the Russian world.” Steinmann was almost the only Western witness behind enemy lines: a correspondent among Putin’s soldiers who, however, publishes in Western media, that world that has sided compactly with Ukraine. For several months, he followed the troops in their advance: first trench after trench in the steppes around Donetsk, then inside the city of Mariupol, on the front line documenting the armed clashes inside the Azovstal steelworks (and not only) and experiencing the unimaginable dramas of the civilian population trapped there. Then further north, in the Lugansk region. And again in Crimea and in the south of Ukraine, where he was the first to enter the nuclear power plant of Zaporizhya while bombs and missiles rained dangerously around the nuclear reactors. And finally back to Donetsk to witness the definitive annexation to Russia as well as the heavy bombing of the Kiev army on the city. “Many will wonder how it was possible to work on the side of the Russians,” writes Steinmann. “Someone could doubt our independence, accusing us of being on the side of the enemy,” says the author. Yet in this book, he tells the real stories of men, women, children, soldiers, volunteers, and refugees, together with the pressures suffered during the controls, describing with precision the ferocious face of a tragic and fratricidal war.

کتاب «از جبهۀ روسیه در جنگ با اوکراین: به روایت فرستاده‌ای در دل سربازان پوتین» داستان واقعی سربازان، مردان، زنان، کودکان، داوطلبان و پناهندگان را روایت می‌کند و با دقت هرچه تمام‌تر چهرۀ بی‌رحم و خشن جنگی مصیبت‌بار و برادرکشانه را که روسیه به راه انداخته است را به تصویر می‌کشد. لوکا اشتاین یک خبرنگار ایتالیایی است او در ۱۸ فوریه ۲۰۲۲ از طریق روسیه وارد استان دنباس (بین روسیه و اوکراین) می‌شود. بعد از ورود اتفاقی او، چند ساعت بعد مقامات روسیه مرزهای این استان را می‌بندند و از ورود هر خبرنگار و دیده‌بانانی که می‌توانند شاهد آغاز حملۀ روسیه به اوکراین باشند جلوگیری می‌کنند. اما لوکا در وسط سربازان روسیه خودش را جا می‌دهد و لحظه به لحظه جنگ را به مدد کلمات به تصویر می‌کشد. «چیزی که قرار بود فقط یک سفر کوتاه باشد تبدیل به ماجرایی فاجعه‌بار شد که هنوز که هنوز است در اوکراین و در دل روسیه ادامه دارد.» _لوکا لوکا اشتاین‌مان تنها شاهد غربی در جبهۀ روسیه به شمار می‌آید: فرستاده ای میان سربازان پوتین که نوشته‌هایش در نشریات غربی به چاپ می‌رسند، همان غرب که در صف اوکراین قرار گرفته است. او چندین ماه سربازان روسیه را در پیشروی‌هایشان همراهی می‌کند. جبهه به جبهه در استپ‌های اطراف دونتسک و داخل شهر ماریوپل. در خط مقدم از نبرد مسلحانه در داخل کارخانۀ فولادسازی آزوفستال و وضعیت اسفبار غیرنظامیانی که در آنجا گیر افتاده بودند روایت می‌کند، سپس به‌سمت شمال و استان لوهانسک رفته و همچنین به کریمه و جنوب اوکراین پا می‌گذارد، وارد مرکز اتمی زاپوریژیا شده درحالی‌که بمب‌ها و موشک‌ها به‌طرز خطرناکی در اطراف رآکتور های اتمی فرود می‌آمده اند. آخرسر دوباره به دونتسک بازمی‌گرد‌د و راوی ملحق‌شدن قطعی این استان به روسیه و حملات اوکراین در این ناحیه می‌شود . اشتاین‌مان می‌گوید: «خیلی ها می‌پرسیدند کار کردن در جبهۀ روسیه چطور برایت ممکن بود؟ قطعا کسانی می‌خواهند استقلال کاری من را زیر سوال ببرند و به طرفداری از یکی از طرفین جنگ متهم کنند. حال آنکه من راوی‌ای کاملا بی‌طرف هستم.»
