Belgium is a country that has been independent for more than 170 years. The current Belgian territory has been under the influence and part of the territory of France and the Netherlands since the 18th century. In 1831, the Belgians achieved independence after much struggle, and Leopold I ascended to the throne as the first king of this country. Documents and records show that the date of the first diplomatic contacts between Iran and Belgium was 1838, which is exactly the same date that Belgium, on the advice of British officials, established diplomatic relations and established an embassy in the Ottoman court. The first treaty of trade and friendship between the two countries was signed in Constantinople in 1841 by Jafar Khan Moshir al-Dawlah, the Iranian Minister Plenipotentiary in the Ottoman Empire, and his Belgian counterpart. A study of political relations between Iran and Belgium in the last two decades of the 19th century showed progress that was brought about by the visits of the king and some Iranian officials to that country.
