A brilliant and bitingly funny collection of stories united around a single crumbling apartment building in Ukraine. A bureaucratic glitch omits an entire building, along with its residents, from municipal records. So begins Reva's "darkly hilarious" (Anthony Doerr) intertwined narratives, nine stories that span the chaotic years leading up to and immediately following the fall of the Soviet Union. But even as the benighted denizens of 1933 Ivansk Street weather the official neglect of the increasingly powerless authorities, they devise ingenious ways to survive. In "Bone Music," an agoraphobic recluse survives by selling contraband LPs, mapping the vinyl grooves of illegal Western records into stolen X-ray film. A delusional secret service agent in "Letter of Apology" becomes convinced he's being covertly recruited to guard Lenin's tomb, just as his parents, not seen since he was a small child, supposedly were. Weaving the narratives together is the unforgettable, chameleon-like Zaya: a cleft-lipped orphan in "Little Rabbit," a beauty-pageant crasher in "Miss USSR," a sadist-for-hire to the Eastern Bloc's newly minted oligarchs in "Homecoming."

هوا دیگر تاریک شده بود که دانیثیل به در ورودی ساختمانش رسید. پلک‌هایش از خستگی سنگین بود، ولی پاهایش پیش نمی‌رفت که داخل شود. شاید به خاطر آن سرفه‌های خشک بود، آن سؤال‌های بی‌پایان، آن کفش‌های بی‌شمار که می‌بایست دمپایی‌هایش را میان آنها پیدا کند. شماره‌ها و حروف قرمزی را که با شابلون کنار در ورودی نفش بسته بود. با انگشت اشاره دنبال کرد. 1933 خیابان ایوانسک. این ساختمان لنگۀ دو ساختمان دیگر این مجموعه بود: دیوارهای پیش‌ساخته، پنجره‌های مربع‌شکل، و درهای آهنیِ عین هم؛ نمای سیمانی‌شان عین هم ترک خورده بود؛ تیرک‌های زیر بالکن‌هاشان عین هم زنگ زده بود. هزار و نهصد و سی و سۀ خیابان ایوانسک بی‌تردید همین‌جا بود، جلوی دماغش. چشم‌هایش را بست و باز کرد. ولی اگر نبود چی؟ جلوتر رفت و به شماره‌های روی دیوار نزدیک شد، نفس سرد سیمان به صورتش خورد. یعنی او تنها کسی بود که می‌توانست آن را ببیند؟ همین‌جا بود، شاید هم نبود. شهروندان خوب نباید بترسند اولین کتاب ماریا روا نویسندۀ اوکراینی‌تبارِ کانادایی است. رمانی در قالب نُه داستان به هم پیوسته که در سال‌های پر‌آشوب قبل و بعد از فروپاشی اتحاد شوروی در اوکراین روی می‌دهند. ماریا رِوا، در این داستان‌های سرشار از خلاقیت، خواننده را با طنزی تلخ و گزنده به دنیای دردناک، سوررئال و گاه خنده‌دار شهروندان خوب خود می‌برد.
