I consider myself first and foremost an artisan. A skilled craftsman, I never considered myself an artist. I never thought that my work was a work of art. My effort in filmmaking has always been to tell stories in the best possible way. I do not know whether these are works of art or not and I am not interested in knowing. All I know is that I put my heart and soul into making these movies, and I had a blast making them. The word "artist" makes people uncomfortable and ashamed, and I can't stand such a word in any way. While the word "artisan" is more humane, more lovable, and more original.

من خودم را قبل از هرچیز یک صنعت‌گر می‌دانم. یک صنعت‌گر قابل، هرگز خودم را هنرمند ندانستم. هرگز فکرش را هم نکردم که کار من یک کار هنری‌ست. همیشه سعی و کوشش من در کار فیلم‌سازی این بوده که داستان‌ها را به بهترین شکل ممکن تعریف کنم. خود من واقعا نمی‌دانم که این‌ها آثار هنری هستند یا نه و علاقه‌ای هم به دانستن ندارم. تنها چیزی که می‌دانم اینست که به هنگام ساختن این فیلم‌ها و قلب و روحم را به کار انداختم و طرز دیوانه‌واری از ساختنشان لذت برده‌ام. کلمه هنرمند انسان را دچار ناراحتی و شرم می‌کند و من به هیچ‌وجه نمی‌توانم چنین کلمه‌ای را تحمل کنم. در حالی که کلمه‌ی صنعت‌گر انسانی‌تر، دوست‌داشتنی‌تر و اصیل‌تر است.
