در کتاب تیمور لنگ: آخرین فاتح بزرگ جهان از زبان هارولد لمب زندگی مردی را می‌خوانیم که پانصد و پنجاه سال پیش می‌کوشید خود را فرمانروای جهان بسازد. او هر اقدامی که در سر داشت، عملی‌شان کرد و موفقیت‌های بسیاری کسب کرد. در آغاز تیمور لنگ چندان مهم نبود فقط بر قطعه‌ای از اراضی و عده‌ای گله‌دار آن سرزمین مرد پرور پهلوان‌خیز یعنی آسیای مرکزی فرمانروایی داشت. تیمور مثل اسکندر مقدونی پسر پادشاه نبود و مانند چنگیز ریاست قبیله را از پدر ارث نمی‌برد. اسکندر و چنگیز هر دو هنگامی که به جهانگردی برخاستند از خود همراهانی داشتند مردم مقدونیه با اسکندر و مغول‌ها با چنگیر همراه بودند ولی تیمور لنگ عده‌ای را دور خود جمع کرد.
