"In these pages, we will have a very precise object and purpose: to follow, between medieval, modern, postmodern, a generally neglected dimension of history, the juridical one; a dimension which, although immersed in the globality of historical becoming, has its own autonomy, which sometimes has close ties to political power and is submissive to it, but which, especially in the manifestations of daily practice and scientific reflection, has the strength and ability to follow its own paths. We will follow legislators, judges, scientists, and simple businessmen in a story marked by a perennial dialectic between localism-particularism and universalism, where law reveals its character as a reality surfacing on the surface of everyday life from the deep roots of civilization and therefore capable of expressing it in its most genuine form; also revealing its possible autonomy from the contingent choices of political power Our journey is long: more than fifteen hundred years. Do they - the Middle Ages, modernity, and post-modernity - have a uniform vision of law, of its genesis and of its expression, so much so as to recommend seeing those fifteen hundred years as a continuum that runs uninterrupted? Or do we see different, if not opposite, visions?"
