Roland Barthes, who is known more as a literary critic, main effort to criticize what societies consider "natural" and reveal its conventional and formal role. This effort, however, quickly expanded the scope of its attention to literature and emphasized the freedom of the reader in reading the text. This book is the first step in a world that was explained by freely borrowing from schools such as the school of existence, Marxism and Freudism, and of course, structuralism, to reach its peak with the theory of "the death of the author" which in a sense includes the criticism of all those schools.

رولان بارت که او را بیشتر به عنوان منتقد ادبی می شناسند، تلاش اصلی اش آن بود که بتواند آنچه را که جوامع «طبیعی» به شمار می آورند به نقد کشیده و نقش قراردادی و صوری آن را فاش سازد. این تلاش اما به سرعت دامنۀ توجه خود را به ادبیات گسترش داد و بر آزادی خواننده در قرائت متن تأکید کرد. کتاب حاضر قدم اولی است در جهانی که با وام گیری آزادانه از مکاتبی چون مکتب اصالت وجود، مارکسیسم و فرویدیسم و البته ساختارگرایی تببین شد تا با طرح نظریۀ «مرگ مولف» که به معنایی نقد همۀ آن مکاتب را در بر می گیرد به اوج برسد.
