The first time we saw the basement, we all fell in love with it and no one thought about the political and ideological meanings of the film. The wonderful cinematography of the film, the passionate acting of its actors, and above all the strange combination of music and story in it were - and still are - mesmerizing. The cartoonish treatment of bitter reality events is reminiscent of Fellini, and the occasional fusion of surreal events with realism brings to mind magical realism. In its first sequence, which is a mixture of the passionate music of wind instruments and corrupt drunkenness after a successful raid, then bombing and war, the film hits its nail and runs for three hours until the end without taking a breath.

زیرزمین را برای اولین بار که دیدیم، همه شیفته‌اش شدیم و کسی به معناهای سیاسی و ایدئولوژیک فیلم فکر نکرد. پرداخت سینمایی فوق‌العاده‌ی فیلم، بازی پرشورِ بازیگرانش و مهم‌تر از همه ترکیب غریب موسیقی و قصه در آن مسحورکننده بود ــ و هنوز هست. پرداخت کارتون‌وار حوادثِ فی‌الواقع تلخ، یادآور فلینی است و به هم ‌آمیختگی گاه‌گاهی رویدادهای فراواقع با واقع‌گرایی، رئالیسم جادویی را به ذهن می‌آورد. فیلم در نخستین سکانس خود که آمیزه‌ای است از موسیقی پرشور سازهای بادی و سرمستی فاسد بعد از یک چپاول موفق و سپس بمباران و جنگ، میخ خود را می‌کوبد و تا پایان بدون این‌که نفس کم بیاورد، سه ساعت می‌تازد. چرا به ذهن ما آدم‌های «معصوم» سینمادوست و انسان‌دوست خطور نمی‌کرد که سازنده‌ی فیلم به نژادپرستی و دفاع از کشتارهای جمعی متهم شود؟
