در فصل اول كتاب به گونه اي فهرست وار وقايع زندگي و حوادث روزگار هدايت بازگو مي شود. در فصل دوم، آثار هدايت، در مقام نويسنده، از حيث قالب، سبك، نثر و شگردهاي روايت بررسي گرديده است. فصل سوم به بازنگري آثار هدايت در مقام روشنفكر تاثير گذار و صاحب نظر اختصاص دارد. فصل پاياني كتاب نيز شامل بازخواني داستان بوف كور است. لازم به ذكر است كه در داستانهاي هدايت دو ديد همراه و متضاد مشاهده مي شود، دو ديد جدايي ناپذير كه مبين تناقضات روحي نويسنده و وضعيت دوره زيست اوست: پرداختن به زندگي و آرمان هاي مردم، و درگيري با نوميدي ها و دلهره هاي خويش...
