رمانتيسم در اصل پديده اي اروپايي است كه زمينه هاي گوناگوني چون ادبيات، فلسفه، علوم اجتماعي و سياسي، معماري، موسيقي، نقاشي، سينما و... را در بر مي گيرد. در كتاب حاضر، عمدة توجه معطوف به سه بعد ادبي، اجتماعي و فلسفي - فكري رمانتيسم بوده است و پس از گزارش سير تاريخي اين اصطلاح، تعريف آن و تميز گرايشهاي گوناگون رمانتيك، زمينه هاي تاريخي، ادبي و اجتماعي پيدايش اين مكتب و ابعاد فلسفي و اجتماعي آن بررسي مي شود
