The growth of the urban population and the necessity of creating and providing service needs of citizens, along with the increasing development of communication and information technologies, have made the spatial-physical expansion of cities in peri-urban areas one of the main characteristics of contemporary cities and have in a way led to the dominance of the dispersed development pattern over a large part of the cities of the world, including cities in developed and developing countries. Given that the dispersed development pattern is considered the dominant pattern of the physical-spatial expansion of cities in the current situation, extensive efforts have been initiated to examine the relationship between this development pattern and various dimensions of urban development, and issues such as the relationship between dispersion and the destruction of biological and animal life, air pollution and energy consumption, social capital, social justice, citizen health, citizen quality of life, urban economy, etc. have been extensively studied in various studies. The main goal of this book is to help better understand this urban form by examining and meta-analyzing numerous studies and research on sprawl and creating an appropriate framework, especially since in recent years, the views towards sprawl among many thinkers and researchers have been mostly negative, and efforts to present a model of intensive development as the best alternative and replacement for sprawl have intensified. At the domestic level, the model of intensive development has been proposed in various studies as an alternative to the dispersed development of Iranian cities and their sustainable development.
