In the distant past, there was a king who had no children. He had vowed that if God would give him a child, he would fill the palace pond with oil every year on his birthday and distribute it among all the people of the city. God gave him a son. در گذشته های دور پادشاهی بود که فرزندی نداشت. او نذر کرده بود اگر خداوند به او فرزندی دهد هر سال در روز تولدش حوض قصر را پر از روغن کند و آن را بین همه ی مردم شهر تقسیم کند. خداوند به او فرزند پسری داد. در بیستمین سالروز تولد شاهزاده باز هم حوض قصر را پر از روغن کردند و پیرزنی برای گرفتن روغن به قصر آمد و از شاهزاده تقاضای روغن کرد اما روغنی در حوض باقی نمانده بود. پیرزن شاهزاده را نفرین کرد و به او گفت که امیدوار است به عشق دختر نارنج و ترنج گرفتار شود. و از دختر زیبارویی گفت که درون یک نارنج بر روی شاخه ی درختی زندانی بود و هر کس که او را آزاد می کرد، می توانست با او ازدواج کند. شاهزاده برای پیدا کردن دختر راهی سفر شد و به درخت نارنج رسید و توانست دختر را نجات دهد. در مسیر برگشت آن دو به قصر، شاهزاده دختر را در کنار رودخانه ای که نزدیکی یک روستا بود گذاشت تا به دنبال خانواده اش برود تا از او استقبال کنند. در همین فاصله کنیز زشت و بدجنسی نزدیک دختر آمد و بعد از آگاه شدن از راز دختر با دروغی او را به روستا فرستاد و خودش آن جا منتظر ماند و خود را دختر نارنج معرفی کرد اما ….
