Virginia Woolf's Orlando 'The longest and most charming love letter in literature', playfully constructs the figure of Orlando as the fictional embodiment of Woolf's close friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West. Spanning three centuries, the novel opens as Orlando, a young nobleman in Elizabeth's England, awaits a visit from the Queen and traces his experience with first love as England under James I lies locked in the embrace of the Great Frost. At the midpoint of the novel, Orlando, now an ambassador in Constantinople, awakes to find that he is now a woman, and the novel indulges in farce and irony to consider the roles of women in the 18th and 19th centuries. The novel ends in 1928, a year consonant with full suffrage for women. Orlando, now a wife and mother, stands poised at the brink of a future that holds new hope and promise for women.

اورلاندو از مهمترین آثار ویرجینیا وولف می باشد که در اصل، نه فقط یک داستان بل تبلوری است از آنچه در ذهن خلاق او گذشته است.
ویرجینیا وولف در رمان «اورلاندو»، روح شعر و ادبیات را در قالب پسرکی به نام اورلاندو متبلور می سازد و این جوان شاعر در نیمه ی رمان تغییر جنسیت می دهد و زن می شود، زن شدن اورلاندو آن قدر طبیعی اتفاق می افتد که نیازی به هیچ توجیه علمی نیست. اورلاندو می خواهد زن باشد و از زن بودن خود خوشنود است. همین. اورلاندو می خواهد مادر باشد و از مادر بودن خود خوشنود است. همین.
این رمان می تواند نشاته ی این باشد که ادبیات به سمت زنانگی می رود. روح ادبیات در جستجوی زنانگی است چون دیگر از زبان مردانه و منطق مردانه و سلطه ی مردانه خسته شده است. ویرجینیا وولف به جو سطحی و سراسر آکسیون و تنش عملی مردانه بی اعتماد بود، نیز به رمان تخیلی بازاری که بی مایگی اش را هیچ به خود نمی گرفت. واقعیت موجود را در «حیرت و سرگشتگی درون و حال ملموس و آکنده از آگاهی» با گونه ای تعصب صوفیانه محک می زد.
