Gadamer Lesebuch was originally published in German in 1997 and was compiled and edited by Jean Grondin in consultation with Hans-Georg Gadamer. A cross-section of writings by one of the twentieth century's greatest philosophers, the volume begins with an autobiographical sketch and culminates in a conversation with Jean Grondin that looks back over a lifetime of productive philosophical work. The Gadamer Reader: A Bouquet of the Later Writings richly conveys the scope and depth of Gadamer's thought, including his work in hermeneutics, aesthetics, and practical philosophy and his essays on Plato, Hegel, and Heidegger. The sixteen essays contained in the German edition are augmented here by three others: Gadamer's last essay on Derrida, Hermeneutics Tracking the Trace (1994), and two writings on practical philosophy. In addition, Palmer offers introductory remarks before each essay, explaining its importance in the context of Gadamer's writings and defining its essential terms. Palmer makes this critically important philosopher clear and accessible to English-speaking readers.

گادامر چنان مغروق در هرمنوتیک بود که با گذشته، امروز و آینده، فلسفه، هنر و ادبیات به گفت‌وگویی هرمنوتیکی می‌نشست و مجموعه‌ای عظیم از نوشته‌هایی روشنگر و مهم را پدید می‌آورد که همگی در کنار هم دستگاه فلسفی مهم و عظیمی را موجب شده‌اند. کتاب «گستره‌ی هرمنوتیک فلسفی» یکی از مجموعه نوشته‌های مهم این فیلسوف آلمانی‌ست که همه‌ی هفت جستار و مقاله‌ی منتشر شده در آن پس از کتاب مهم و تاریخ‌ساز «حقیقت و روش» نوشته شده‌اند. هفت متن این کتاب در دو بخش گستره‌ی هرمنوتیک و مواجهه‌های هرمنوتیکی، ابتدا گونه‌ای رجوع به فلسفه‌ی باستان و به خاصه حکمت عملی جاری و ساری در فلسفه‌ی یونان را پیش برده که به وضوح حضور ارسطو و روش فلسفی او در آن‌ها دیده می‌شود. گستره‌ی هرمنوتیک فلسفی گادامر، در بخش مواجهه‌های هرمنوتیکی، با فیلسوفان و سنت‌های فلسفی گوناگون پیش و پس از خودش مواجه شده و گفت‌وگویی را آغاز می‌کند که بسیاری از نگره‌ها و برداشت‌های پیشینی ما از فلسفه‌ی غرب را تغییر می‌دهد. گادامر مواجهه‌ی هرمنوتیکی‌اش را از افلاطون و ارسطو آغاز می‌کند و در مسیرش با هگل، هایدگر و دریدا هم روبرو می‌شود که این گستره‌ی عظیم مواجهه‌ی فکورانه و روشنگرانه، در عین عمق فلسفی، جذابیت بسیاری هم برای علاقه‌مندان فلسفه خواهد داشت.
