فرانسیسکو سونیاگا در رمان «مسافر هواپیمای ترومن» به زندگی سیاسی و ماجرای دیوخنس اسکالانته می‌پردازد؛ مردی که داوطلب ریاست‌جمهوری ونزوئلا شد و احزاب آزادی‌خواه برای متوقف کردن واپسگرایی، بر سر انتخاب او به اجماع رسیدند. اما رخداد نامنتظره‌ای دکتر اسکالانته را از رسیدن به جایگاه ریاست‌جمهوری باز داشت و پس از آن مسیر تاریخ عوض شد و ونزوئلا دوباره به‌سمت هرج‌ومرج، دیکتاتوری و کودتاهای نظامی رفت. او استعاره‌ای است از کهن‌الگویی که می‌خواهد منجی وطن خویش شود ولی در میانۀ راه جنون امانش نمی‌دهد و به تاریکخانۀ تاریخ فرستاده می‌شود.
