در یکصد سال گذشته علم زبان‌شناسی در مفهوم جدید، علمی است جدید و نوپا؛ اما تحقیقات و بررسی‌های مربوط به زبان‌شناسی قدمتی بیش از چند قرن قبل از میلاد را دارد. در این علم به نقد و بررسی قالب‌هایی چون صرف، نحو، آواشناسی، واج‌شناسی، معناشناسی، کاربردشناسی، تحلیل گفتمان، زبان‌شناسی تاریخی-تطبیقی و… پرداخته می‌شود.
