The book "Hunting and Darkness" is narrated by the author himself, and the hero of the novel is the author himself, Ranpo. Edogawa Ranpo, a writer of detective stories, becomes a detective when he meets an attractive woman named Shizuku. This woman admits that she is being harassed by a lover whom she rejected and who threatens to kill her and her husband. Ranpo decides to solve the riddle. Therefore, the author involves himself in a mysterious story where the identity of the culprit of the story becomes more interesting every moment. Just when it seems that the search for this murderous man will lead to nothing, a small detail is used for the detective to realize that all his conclusions were based on a mistake and the culprit is closer than he thought. He did and... Edogawa Ranpo is one of the founders of detective literature in Japan, who has published many short stories and novels. The real name of this author is Hirai Taro, who chose this nickname for himself because of his love and devotion to Edgar Allan Poe.

کتاب شکار و تاریکی از زبان خود نویسنده ی آن روایت می شود و قهرمان رمان خود نویسنده یعنی رانپو است. ادوگاوا رانپو به عنوان نویسنده ای که داستان های پلیسی می نویسد وقتی با یک زن جذاب به نام شیزوکو روبرو می شود تبدیل به یک کارآگاه می شود. این زن اعتراف می کند توسط مرد عاشقی که او عشقش را رد کرده مورد آزار و اذیت قرار می گیرد و این مرد او را تهدید به قتل او و شوهرش می کند. رانپو تصمیم می گیرد معما را حل کند. بنابراین نویسنده خود را درگیر داستانی مرموز می کند که هویت مقصر داستان هر لحظه گرایزان تر می شود. درست وقتی به نظر می رسد که جستجوی این مرد قاتل به هیچ نتیجه ای نمی رسد، جزئیاتی کوچک به کار می آید تا کارآگاه پی ببرد که تمام نتیجه گیری هایش بر پایه ی یک خطا بوده است و مجرم نزدیک تر از چیزی است که او تصور می کرد و ... ادوگاوا رانپو از پایه گذاران ادبیات پلیسی در ژاپن است که داستان های کوتاه و رمان های زیادی منتشر کرده است. نام اصلی این نویسنده هیرائی تارو است که بخاطر علاقه و ادای دینش به ادگار آلن پو این نام مستعار را برای خودش برگزیده است.
