The first recognition of the identity of the character in the text is through his name, but in the stage performance of a play, our first recognition is usually formed through the actor's physical appearance when he first enters the stage. This means that at very first glance, the actor's body enables us to achieve a temporary identity for a character. This temporary identity directs our expectations about the future behavior of this character. On the other hand, we relate what the actor shows in his face, movements, and moods, the words he utters, and even the tone of his voice when uttering the words to this temporary identity. This allows us to confirm or even reject the temporary identity.

اولین شناختی که از هویت شخصیت در متن به دست می آید به واسطه ی نام اوست اما در اجرای صحنه ای یک نمایشنامه اولین شناخت ما معمولاً به واسطه ی نمود بدنی بازیگر در اولین ورودش به صحنه شکل میگیرد. این بدان معناست که در همان نگاه اول بدن بازیگر ما را قادر میسازد به هویتی موقت برای یک شخصیت دست یابیم این هویت موقت به انتظارات ما در مورد رفتار آینده ی این شخصیت جهت میدهد. از طرف دیگر ما آنچه بازیگر در صورت و حرکات و حالاتش نشان میدهد کلماتی که بیان میکند و حتی تن صدایش در بیان کلمات را به این هویت موقتی ربط میدهیم این کار به ما امکان می دهد هویت موقتی را تصدیق اصلاح یا حتی رد کنیم.
