تبيين انديشه هاي "خاتمي" و فهم آنها، براي رشد و شكوفائي مدرنيته و نهادينه كردن اصول دموكراتيك در ايران امروز اهميت بسزائي دارد و در قالب عقلانيت ارتباطي و بهره گيري از اخلاق و كنش تفاهمي و مفاهمه بين الاذهاني، مبتني بر حق انتخاب آزاد و غير اجباري تمامي افراد انساني است. "خاتمي" در گفتمان خود، مقولاتي چون آزادي، قانون و جامعه مدني رادر سطح ملي و گفتگوي فرهنگ ها را در سطح جهاني با بنيان هاي تئوريك و آگاهي از ضرورت هاي زندگي امروز عرضه مي كند.
