C'est le grand jour de la sortie en forêt de l'école maternelle des Pinsons. La météo clémente et l'enthousiasme des éducateurs comme des enfants donnent à cette journée un avant-goût de vacances. Tout se déroule pour le mieux jusqu'au moment du retour, quand une enfant manque à l'appel. C'est Emma, cinq ans, une des élèves de la toute jeune institutrice Mylène Gilmont. C'est l'affolement général.
Tandis que deux enseignantes ramènent le groupe d'enfants au car, les autres partent aussitôt à sa recherche. Mylène prend une direction différente, s'aventurant donc seule dans la forêt. Au bout d'une demi-heure, les forces de l'ordre sont alertées. Un impressionnant dispositif est mis en place et l'équipe du capitaine Dupuis se déploie dans la forêt avec une redoutable efficacité. Et puis Emma réapparaît.
Le soulagement de ses parents arrivés sur place, Camille et Patrick, est à la hauteur de l'angoisse qu'ils ont éprouvée. Visiblement, il y a eu plus de peur que de mal pour la petite. Pourtant, la battue doit continuer avant la tombée de la nuit, car cette fois, c'est Mylène qui ne revient pas. Camille a retrouvé sa fille. En vérité, elle ne le sait pas encore, pour elle, le cauchemar ne fait que commencer.
