Some of Eugene O’Neill’s plays are based on his experiences as a sailor. O’Neill was greatly influenced by Joseph Conrad in his works, and like him, he depicts the harsh nature of life on the water. The plays in this book recall the themes of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, especially the alienation of humans from nature. | In The Long Journey Home, we read the story of the simple-minded Joshua who misses his homeland and is kidnapped on the very day he is supposed to receive his wages to return home and take him to work on another ship. Where Two Paths Meet is the story of a captain who gazes longingly at the sea from the roof of his house every night. He has lost his mind and is waiting in his imagination for his ship to return with treasure buried on a Pacific island. Whale Oil is set on a whaling ship trapped in the ice and led by a cruel and fanatical captain. In this play, O'Neill explores what he sees as the fundamental contradictions between male and female temperaments.
