دورانت‌ها با خلاصه‌ای در دسترس از فلسفه و پیشرفت اجتماعی، ما را به سفری در تاریخ می‌برند و امکانات و محدودیت‌های بشریت را در طول زمان بررسی می‌کنند. دورانت‌ها با کنار هم قرار دادن زندگی‌ها، ایده‌ها و دستاوردهای بزرگ با چرخه‌های جنگ و فتح، مضامین بلند تاریخ را آشکار می‌کنند و به ما معنا می‌دهند.
