"What is enlightenment?" It is an essay by the philosopher Immanuel Kant in 1784. In the December 1784 issue of the Berlinische Monatschrift (Berlin Monthly), edited by Friedrich Gedicke and Johann Erich Bister, Kant answered a question posed a year earlier by the Reverend Johann Friedrich Zollner, also a Prussian government official. Kant's article also deals with the causes of the lack of enlightenment and the necessary prerequisites for creating the possibility of enlightenment for people. He considered it necessary to abolish the paternalism of the church and the state and to give people the freedom to use their own reason. Comte praised Frederick II of Prussia for creating these preconditions. Kant focused on religious issues and said: "Our rulers" are less interested in telling citizens what to think about artistic and scientific matters.
