What ignites the spark and flame of my desire is nothing but beauty itself, neither inner beauty nor soul beauty, maybe not even a pair of eyes, a face or a body, at a picture, a half glance, an opinion, or a State, characteristics that are both physical and spiritual. Consider them as separate verses of a poem, fragments of a great work, which do not promise much but do not speak much and are sometimes cruelly deceptive. And in none of these cases is my judgment that you are beautiful a judgment that is the same as a spark of desire, something like a philosophical judgment. My judgment is not about what I have learned and experienced so far, but about what I hope to learn and experience in the future. This is a manifestation of my need to have passionate sexual, psychological, and moral companionship with another person, a need that cannot be met through philosophical reflection.

آنچه جرقه و شعله‌ی میلم را بر می افروزد چیزی به جز خود زیبایی نیست، نه زیبایی باتنی و نه زیبایی نفس، شاید حتی یک جفت چشم، یک چهره یا یک بدن هم نه، به عکس، یک نیم نگاه، یک نظر، یا یک حالت، ویژگی هایی که هم جسمانی اند و هم روحانی. آن ها را ابیات جداگانه ای از شعری منظوم، قطعاتی از اثری بزرگ، تلقی کنید که بسی وعده منی دهند ولی زیاد سخن نمی گویند و گاهی بی رحمانه فریبنده اند. و در هیچ یک از این موارد قضاوت من مبنی بر اینکه شما زیبایید قضاوتی که با جرقه‌ی میل یکی است، چیزی همچون حکمی فلسفی نیست. قضاوت من به آنچه تا کنون آموخته و تجربه کرده‌ام مربوط نیست، بلکه مربوط است به آنچه امیدوارم در آینده بیاموزم و تجربه کنم. این تجلی‌ای است از نیاز من به مصاحبت م معاشرت پر شور-جنسی، روانی، اخلاقی، با شخصی دیگر، نیازی که امکان ندارد از طریق تامل فلسفی تامین شود.
